Rohit Sharma tests Covid Positive; Leadership Dilemma Looms over Indian Side

India’s all-format Captain Rohit Sharma tested Covid Positive on Saturday. The news came as a shock for the Indian side gearing up for the fifth test match against England. The fifth and final test match of almost year long impending series will begin from 1st July at Edgbaston.

The absence of Rohit Sharma from 5th test is not fully confirmed as he has tested positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) which give quick reports. If he tests Covid positive in further rounds of testing, then Team India will be left with no choice and will have to look for a replacement Captain. Also the absence of regular Vice-Captain K L Rahul implies selectors will have to pick another replacement Captain.

Earlier, selectors had not named any Vice-Captain for the solitary test match. While an official statement announcing the leadership role is impending on the part of BCCI, the certain names have been doing the rounds.

Being an important test, selectors may give preference to the experience in form of Ex-skipper Virat Kohli. Kohli’s impressive test captaincy record may go in his favor.

In case its not Kohli, selectors may pick Rishabh Pant who led Indian side against South Africa in recently concluded T20I series. Looking at the way Rishabh Pant led team made comeback in the T20I series that ended in a tie, may earn wicket-keeper batsman his maiden test captaincy call.

Apart from Kohli and Pant, Bumrah is another player whose name is doing the rounds for the role. In case one needs logic then Bumrah led the Indian side on the final day of warm-up match against Leicestershire in absence of Rohit Sharma. Also, Bumrah was named Vice-Captain of the Indian side led by K L Rahul that toured South Africa at the start of the year.
