Laxmii Movie Review: Delivers Social Message But Lacks Content

The movie is being touted as a horror-comedy, but is not either. It miserably fails in both aspects, be it horror and comedy. In the name of horror, there is not even a single thrilling moment that send chills down the spine. Also, comedy being the plus point for Akshay Kumar movies does not seem to be working here.

I think horror must be the most intelligent genre, but unfortunately, it has become the most illogical genre, and the credit for that goes to many filmmakers. While some filmmakers have made appreciable contributions to the genre, but still mockery on the name of horror is continuing. Unfortunately, Akshay Kumar starrer, “Laxmii” also adds to one such poor attempt in the league of horror movies.

Though the movie is being touted as a horror-comedy, but is not either. It miserably fails in both aspects, be it horror and comedy. In the name of horror, there is not even a single thrilling moment that send chills down the spine. Also, comedy being the plus point for Akshay Kumar movies does not seem to be working here.

The three departments of the movie – the Story, Screenplay, and Direction have been handled by Raghav Lawrence. The Story is decent, had a great scope of creating something extraordinary. The Screenplay written by Lawrence is very average, had been much better.

However, it is the direction where Lawrence disappoints highly. Inside a packaging labeled as a horror-comedy outside, Laxmii is a revenge drama of a ghost. But for a revenge drama to appeal, the emotion has to be strong. I feel that emotion is intentionally subdued, keeping in mind its a comedy, after all, forget about horror. Also, to confuse things further there is a lot of social message. But I think this is where the problem lies. The movie promises everything and finally ends up with nothing. The movie stands emotionless, lacks thrill in the name of horror, and does not entertain in the name of comedy. Also the social message remains unimpactful in absence of meaningful content.

Cinematography is just and, at some points, stills are brilliant. Again, I’m disappointed with the choice of sets and use of lights. Must say, too bad choice for a horror movie.

In acting, Akshay Kumar has done well. However, it was Sharad Kelkar’s’ brilliant portrayal of transgender that stole the show. There is not much to perform for the rest of the cast. Still, Rajesh Sharma was exceptionally well. Kiara Advani has done moderately well.

Honestly, “Laxmii” is a lot of Social Message, but when it comes to Content, the movie has nothing to deliver and hence falls flat on the ground. For an OTT release, I think our audience deserves a better movie than “Laxmii”.

My Verdict – 1.5/5
